Fiji: Routine cabinet reshuffle indicates economic focus ahead of 2026 general election

On 17 December, Prime Minister Rabuka announced a reshuffle of cabinet members. Rabuka said the purpose was to put high performers into priority areas and consolidate portfolios for the government’s lead up to the mid-2026 general election. The changes will be in effect from 19 January and are as follows:

  1. Sakiasi Ditoka to Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade,

  2. Mosese Bulitavu to Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management,

  3. Lynda Tabuya to Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change,

  4. Tomasi Tunabuna to Minister for Agriculture and the Sugar Industry

  5. Charan Jeath Singh to Minister for Public Enterprises, Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, and

  6. Iferemi Vasu to Minister for iTaukei Affairs.

Assessment: The changes focus on economic development, including foreign trade and investment, and highly likely indicate PM Rabuka’s desire to improve economic opportunities and livelihoods ahead of the general election. This is the third reshuffle in as many years initiated by PM Rabuka during the end of year period, highly likely indicating that he sees the changes as routine rather than crisis management. No changes were made to the defence and law enforcement portfolios illustrating that PM Rabuka is satisfied with the direction and competence of their Ministers.
