Fiji: China intent to deepen military ties lacks detail
On 17 July, Fijian and Chinese officials celebrated the 99th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) at the Chinese Embassy in Suva. According to media reporting, the Chinese Chargé d'Affaires stated China was ready to deepen military-to-military cooperation with Fiji. He and the Defence Attaché noted recent major engagement included 40 Republic of Fiji Military Forces personnel conducting exchanges in China during the last 12 months and China's hospital ship visit in October 2025. A speech delivered by Fiji's Minister of Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, reiterated that Fiji maintained an independent foreign policy while also welcoming defence cooperation focused on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, maritime security, peacekeeping, and professional development.
Assessment: Unlike the signing of the Vuvale Union Treaty with Australia earlier in the month, no specific or major announcements were made by China to elaborate on the purported increased support. The PLA Anniversary would have been a significant date to make such an announcement. While future announcements of more detailed assistance may occur, the more time that elapses since Australia's Treaty announcement indicates China's action is reactive, rather than part of long-term plans.
