Fiji: Surge in dengue fever and leptospirosis cases likely to impact tourism sector

Over 1-7 April, the Fiji Ministry of Health (MoH) reported an increase in dengue fever cases recorded in the first quarter of the year to 5,128. The MoH disclosed that four people had died from the disease with the latest being a secondary school student from Xavier College in Ba. Separately, the MoH also announced seven recorded deaths from leptospirosis. The MoH began an awareness campaign regarding leptospirosis and dengue, and has urged the public to destroy mosquito breeding places and to clean up compounds and surroundings. The MoH has also conducted clean-ups and spraying in hotspot areas in Ba.

Assessment: Poor sanitation resulting from recent heavy rainfall and flooding are very likely to be significant contributors to the  dengue fever and leptospirosis outbreak. Leptospirosis cases are expected to rise, as cases historically increase from January to April. Members of the public will very likely embrace the prevention measures following the recorded deaths. Tourism is likely to be negatively in hotspot areas.
