Fiji: Traditional reconciliation almost certain to continue as primary method for landowner and commercial venture disputes
On 7 November, the Fiji Government announced that a 16 month disagreement with the local landowners of the Mount Kasi Gold Mine had been resolved. A reconciliation ceremony was held in Dawara village between the government, landowners, and Vautukoula Gold Mines Limited who hold an exploration licence. The landowners indicated in 2024 that they preferred an Australian company to conduct the exploration activities rather than the Chinese owned Vautukoula Gold Mines. Negotiations with the landowners were primarily led by the Lands Minister, with assurances given around benefits for the local community including setting up local service businesses.
Assessment: Opposition to commercial development is commonly driven by local landowner leaders, particularly in rural areas of Fiji. Prime Minister Rabuka is sympathetic to iTaukei (indigenous Fijian) issues as well as economic development. Therefore, talanoa (a traditional form of group dialogue) will almost certainly be the preferred method to resolve conflict for new ventures.
