Region: New Zealand Security Intelligence Service highlights increasing espionage and foreign interference in the South Pacific
On 13 August, the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) issued its fourth annual threat assessment, titled New Zealand's Security Threat Environment 2026. It noted the domestic security threats faced by New Zealand "are also experienced by our Pacific partners," highlighting increasing espionage and foreign interference in domestic and regional politics by foreign intelligence services. These activities include deception and corruption, and targeting local communities as well as ground-based space infrastructure.
Comment: The report stated that China's intelligence services were the most active espionage agency in New Zealand but did not explicitly state their presence and activity in the South Pacific.
