Samoa: Invitation aimed at exploiting opposition disunity ahead of snap election

Around 7 August, the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) leader, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, invited the caretaker Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, and leader of the Faatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party, Laʻaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, to an open dialogue at the HRPP headquarters. The dialogue, which will be had “over coffee and gravy”, is expected to address the escalating differences between PM Fiame and Laauli Schmidt. In January, Laauli Schmidt was dismissed from cabinet by PM Fiame following allegations of 10 criminal offences. More recently, PM Fiame filed a police complaint against Laauli Schmidt regarding allegations of her involvement in the murder of Professor Caroline Gabbard and the death of Tuuau Maletino. Both guests are yet to respond to the invitation.

Assessment: Tuilaepa Malielegaoi’s invitation serves two objectives. Firstly, it aims to ease political tensions in Samoa as it prepares for snap elections on 29 August 2025. Public cordiality  among the three top political leaders is likely to discourage the urge for violence amongst their supporters as campaigning continues. Secondly, Tuilaepa Malielegaoi is attempting to gain political capital and appeal to voters by portraying himself as  a mature leader, highlighting the contrast to PM Fiame and Laauli Schmidt. This move is very likely to appeal to some FAST party voters.
