Samoa: Police raids address fear of developing domestic methamphetamine market
On 20 July, Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo announced that several drug raids focused on methamphetamine had taken place across the country since May 2025. He also stated that the main supply was from American Samoa, with Samoa developing into its own market in addition to a transhipment point. The raids across both islands also seized several illegal firearms, with one arrest including the son of the caretaker speaker of parliament. Commissioner Filipo stated that a large amount of information originated from within the community and that Samoa also relied on increased interdepartmental and international cooperation. Separately, a regional security forum was held in Suva over 14-16 July, which included drug trafficking as a key security issue.
Assessment: Samoan authorities and politicians highly likely fear Samoa developing the same issues with widespread drug use as Fiji, including increased rates of communicable diseases and youth crime. Political leaders recently initiated legislative reforms to strengthen police powers and community initiatives to combat the drug trade. However, it is a positive sign that the Samoan Police Service has initiated a coordinated policing action to act on fresh information without waiting for expanded powers.
