Tonga: Next Prime Minister likely to align with King Tupou VI

On December 9, Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni resigned from his post as Prime Minister of Tonga. His resignation came a few hours ahead of a scheduled parliamentary debate on a motion of no confidence (MONC). This was the second MONC moved by opposition member Dr Aisake ‘Eke in just over 12 months. Prior to the vote, Dr ‘Eke  expressed confidence he had the numbers to win this round after a close loss in September 2023. According to one media source, the Palace had Noble members in Sovaleni’s Cabinet withdraw their support from the PM.

Assessment: Dr. Aisake ‘Eke’s confidence appears to be backed by a higher authority, likely the King. Disagreement between the PM and the King has been ongoing since early 2024 around primacy over defence and foreign affairs representation and decision-making. The King’s interest in these portfolios reflects the impact of wider strategic competition between the United States and China and its effect on the South Pacific. It is almost certain that the next Prime Minister will be aligned with King Tupou VI, with Dr. ‘Eke or a compliant Noble as the likely candidates. Government formation is likely to delay other government work including budget preparations.
