Vanuatu: Further volcanic activity assessed as low, provincial response currently sufficient

On 25 August, volcanic activity increased on Ambae. Ashfall affected northern, eastern, and southern parts of Ambae island, while also affecting northern Pentecost as the ash plume drifted southeast. High levels of sulfur dioxide were identified in the ashfall, causing contamination of water sources (rain tanks), as well as household and commercial crops. The Penama Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) has been activated and the worst-affected areas declared a Disaster Area. The PEOC has stated current priorities are clean drinking and cooking water, food, and health. The central government has released AUD$235,000 to provincial authorities to support the response, while also forward-deploying assessment teams to report back on further support required by 14 September. Provincial officials have also been clearing ash from roads, with local police conducting educational outreach and issuing masks.

Assessment: Ashfall has stopped and the Vanuatu Meteorological and Geo-hazards Department currently assesses an imminent increase in activity to be low. Ambae Volcano remains at Alert Level 3 (Minor Eruption – on a 5-level scale) due to ongoing volcanic gas and steam emissions, persistent lava effusion, and continued geomorphological changes within the crater occurring since November 2025. The primary response effort is provincial, indicating the national government is comfortable with the immediate response. International support is unlikely to be requested until the assessment teams report in on 14 September, and would likely be focused on continued food and water support, as well as assistance constructing more permanent shelter structures for households to prevent future crop and water contamination.
