Bougainville: Citizens uphold democracy
On 3 September, the Bougainville Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Desmond Tsianai, announced the rescheduling of the initial polling day from 4 September to 5 September. Mr. Desmond Tsianai stated that the reason for the rescheduling was to ensure all constituencies received ballot papers for the one-day election. According to Mr. Tsianai, the ballot papers arrived later than expected and had some irregularities with serial numbers during printing and required rectification before distribution. Subsequently, on the new voting day, Mr. Tsianai confirmed a high turnout of voters and a smooth and peaceful election. He announced an extension of the voting to 6 September for voters in selected polling stations in Buka who could not cast their ballots the previous day.
Assessment: With no incidents of violence reported during the elections, Bougainvilleans demonstrated a choice for democracy during the polls. Ballot counting is expected to end by 21 September 2025, and a return of writs tabled by 22 September 2025. The incoming government and citizens will now focus on the roadmap to independence in 2027.
