Fiji: Continued ministerial intervention highly likely to avert electrical worker strike
On 9 January, Fiji’s Construction, Energy, and Timber Worker’s Union issued a strike notice regarding 500 Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) workers to take effect on 25 February. The union claims EFL has refused to negotiate a 10% wage increase and failed to pay various allowances. The matter has been before the Arbitration Court since 2025. Around 23 January, union representatives met with Fiji’s Minister for Employment who claimed more meetings with both parties will take place and the issue is likely to be resolved before the end of January.
Assessment: Continued facilitation by the Minister for Employment will almost certainly put both parties back toward the arbitration process. Government intervention was called for by the union. The February strike is unlikely to eventuate.
