Nauru: Population almost certainly expects economic results during re-elected President’s second term
On 14 October, Nauru’s President, David Adeang, was formally re-elected by the country’s new parliament to serve a second term. Almost all eligible voters out of the country’s 11000 total population voted in a general election on 11 October. President Adeang faced no opposition during the presidential election which takes place amongst parliamentary members. A referendum to extend the term of MPs from three to four years fell well short of the needed two-thirds majority with only 45% in favour.
Assessment: The election results show that while public support is present for President Adeang’s policies, the population also expects quick results. During his first term, the President switched recognition from Taiwan to China, initiated a golden visa programme, and has signed significant economic deals with Australia, China, and a Canadian deepsea mining company. There will almost certainly be an expectation that these deals begin to show employment and welfare results over the next 12-24 months.
