Palau: Country’s direction remains pro-US and pro-Taiwan after election
Following the November 5 election, Palau’s incumbent President Surangel Whipps Junior won a comfortable victory over former President Tommy Remengesau. Whipps introduced tax relief for low income earners, and payment increases for government employees and retirees in the lead up to election day. Whipps has stated he will diversify the economy with crypto currency and blockchain initiatives, visa categories to attract digital nomads, and increasing commercial fishing. He has also welcomed an increased US military presence. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Foreign Minister restated its displeasure at Palau’s recognition of Taiwan.
Assessment: President Whipps has been vocal about CCP attempts to gain a switch from diplomatic recognition. Palau is one of three Pacific Islands that remain with Taiwan. These statements, as well as seeking further US military presence, help Palau to secure increased US funding – Palau is one of three states in a Compact of Free Association with the US. Increased military presence is also occurring on Guam, another Compact state, with a ten year missile defence construction programme.
