Samoa: Political parties seek snap election in new avenue to oust Prime Minister
During a weekly press conference, the FAST Party Chairman, La’auli Leuatea Schmidt, indicated the party’s intent to seek a snap election. Schmidt stated that this would occur if the Government did not pass its budget vote scheduled for 27 May 2025 and that the opposition Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) would support FAST in voting against it.
Assessment: Despite having a majority of MPs, FAST and HRPP have previously failed to cooperate on two separate motions of no confidence to oust the Prime Minister Fiame’s Government. This was likely due to both leaders seeking the easiest route to Prime Ministership for themselves. PM Fiame has proven adept at courting the opposition when necessary and has recently offered the Speaker position to the HRPP. Continued cooperation between FAST and the HRPP, including statements from both of its leaders, will indicate the likelihood of success in undermining the Government’s budget bill vote.
