Solomon Islands: New Prime Minister likely to maintain a measured approach toward China while prioritising ties with traditional partners
On 15 May, opposition leader Matthew Wale was sworn in as the Solomon Islands Prime Minister (PM) after defeating Peter Agovaka 26–22. The parliamentary vote followed the removal of former PM Jeremiah Manele in a motion of no confidence (MONC) on 7 May. In his inaugural address, PM Wale identified free education and economic reform as key priorities. He also stated that his government would seek increased Australian funding under an existing AUD$190 million 2025 security agreement. When asked by media about the 2022 China–Solomon Islands security pact, he stated he does not "see the security agreement." By 17 May, 24 cabinet ministers had been sworn in to complete his new Cabinet. PM Wale is the leader of the Solomon Islands Democratic Party, has never previously been PM, and represents the Aoke Langa Langa Constituency in Malaita Province.
Assessment: PM Wale was a vocal critic of Solomon Islands–China relations after Honiara's diplomatic switch from Taiwan in 2019. However, after leading a delegation to Beijing in 2024, his rhetoric became more moderate. During the 2024 general election, Wale advocated for a foreign policy centred on balanced international engagement and greater transparency in external partnerships. He is likely to maintain a measured approach toward China while prioritising ties with traditional partners, particularly Australia. Under PM Wale, the Solomon Islands will very likely pursue a hedging strategy – extracting assistance from China while aligning more closely with Australia. China's influence through previous administrations means bilateral relations and support are unlikely to reduce significantly.
