Vanuatu: New coalition government focused on recovery and rebuilding Port Vila
On 27 January, leaders of five major political parties signed a memorandum of agreement in Port Vila to form the next coalition government. Political parties involved were the Graon Mo Jastis Party, Iauko Group, Leaders Party, Reunification Movement for Change, and the Vanua'aku Party. Although official results from the snap election held on January 16 were yet to be declared on January 28, preliminary results revealed that the five political parties qualify for a majority. 27 seats are required for a majority in the 52 seat parliament. The previous government was also a coalition government.
Assessment: The snap election was devoid of political unrest or any major incident despite the short preparation period after the 17 December earthquake. The agreement between the political parties demonstrates a strong majority in parliament, with the parties collectively representing diverse constituencies across the country, with 32 out of 52 seats available. Leaders of the political parties emphasised their commitment to rebuilding Port Vila and providing relief to communities affected by the earthquake. One of the party leaders will most certainly be elected as the next prime minister of Vanuatu. However, Charlot Salwai is unlikely to be reelected as prime minister following the lack of confidence in his previous administration.
