Solomon Islands: Goldmine clashes likely to remain localised as dialogue proceeds
On 20 January, landowners burned more than 30 pieces of machinery at the Gold Ridge Mine Limited (GRML) in Central Guadalcanal. The incident occurred following accusations that police stationed at the site had searched landowners and seized minerals, as well as claims against GRML around reduced royalty payments and further mistreatment. The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) said it contained the situation, reinforced security, and had begun investigations. GRML condemned the destruction and said operations would continue under strengthened safety measures while it engaged with police, landowner leaders, and government officials.
Assessment: This is likely to remain a localised matter. Further local protests and sabotage are unlikely due to the increased police presence and dialogue between landowners and the company.
